  • In early 2011, CLC's SER Project and the Parliamentary Programme, with Black Sash, Peoples' Health Movement SA, National Welfare Forum and Global Call to Action against Poverty, organised three strategy meetings on the ratification by South Africa of the ICESCR and its Optional Protocol.
  • On 2 February 2011, the Parliamentary Programme and the Children's Rights Project hosted a round table discussion with international expert on the rights of persons with disabilities, Professor Michael Stein, from Harvard University.
  • The purpose of the roundtable discussion with Professor Michael Stein was to engage campaign partners in a discussion on strengthening advocacy on the right to education for children with disabilities.

The Community Law Centre, Black Sash, People’s Health Movement South Africa, and the National Welfare Social Service and Development Forum, and the Global Call to Action against Poverty in South Africa will host a seminar on understanding the International Covenant on Economic Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR) and the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). This seminar precedes the UN MDG summit set for next week, on 20-22 September 2010, where South Africa; along with over 150 countries; will report on progress towards achieving these basic development commitments.

‘Civil society groups want SA to ratify key human rights treaty’

Leading civil society organisations have signed an open letter to President Jacob Zuma and the Speaker of the National Assembly, calling on government to ratify two landmark international human rights agreements. The Community Law Centre, Black Sash, People’s Health Movement South Africa, National Welfare Forum and ‘Global Call to Action against Poverty South Africa’ say it would be an appropriate way to mark the 62nd anniversary of the ‘Universal Declaration of Human Rights’ on Friday, 10 December 2010. Nelson Mandela signed the ‘International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights’ (ICESCR) 16 years ago but South Africa remains one of the few countries in the world yet to ratify the treaty.
